A historic mug

mock up of metal mugs with portraits of Ellis Island immigrants

This was an assignment for MATS Bootcamp 2017.  The method of MATS classes is brilliant. There is a mini assignment in preparation for the big one and by doing each step, it helps break down daunting tasks into chewable pieces.

I first came to the United States as an exchange student and with much love and support, I was able to come back here to go to college.  I guess I officially became an immigrant when I married B.  But in learning more about Ellis Island I could relate and remember feelings of hope, fear, excitement, sadness, joy, surprise, and many more.

For this assignment, we focused on the distinctive and different hair styles and hair dresses. It was fun to pay attention to small details.

Here are a few of my sketches

At the end I interconected all the heads, to form the pattern. While thinking about what that meant I remember a bumper sticker saying that was very fitting, so I paraphrase it. HUMANkind be both!
