faces in places

5x7in multi-layer watercolor, ink and color pencil on paper

More puppies! This one is hiding from his owner, poor guy!
I feel the owner’s moment of desperation.

This was a really fun experiment observing the art of Rie Muñoz. Rie described her art as expressionism, I think she is an amazing story teller. Her rich patterns are the perfect compliment to the stylized figures and expressions in her work.

Art by Rie Muñoz

The playful movement in her art, enhances the emotion in all her compositions. You can see more of her art at riemunoz.com It is a treat.

This experimental piece was part of the 100 days of cementing my style. It was neat to piece it together from borrowed inspiration, finding faces in random places, using an old background, and the fresh subject in my life.

I see faces in just about anything. Come to find out my mom and my son do too. The interesting thing is that we see different faces in the same things (towels, wood grain, stones, cars, etc.) One day I went around my house collecting a few faces and that was the beginning of orange guy.

Here is a visual summary of the whole process:

Sometimes the pieces fit together, sometimes they need a little adjusting. But the process is always full of good lessons.
