The last of the trio: Change, Unexpected, Underneath (originals available here, prints available here)

Icebergs are fascinating, they come in all shapes and sizes and they are made of frozen freshwater that has broken off a glacier.
The bulk of its mass lies beyond the surface. To me, it is a perfect way to represent people. Most of us see each other in glimpses of time, and unless we really take the time to get to know somebody, we mostly touch the “tip of the iceberg.”

I know I have just touched the surface, learning about inequality and reflecting on the way I grew up and the way I live my life. Here is a great video, that has helped me understand more.

When I was designing and painting Change, Unexpected, and Underneath I was focused on my life mostly. Our family was getting ready for a big change, that transformed into a current of changes with the virus and us being more aware of so much racial injustice.

Change, unexpected, and underneath would be some really good words to describe 2020.

I commit to keep learning and discovering what is underneath mine and my culture’s believes, to challenge them, and to teach what I learn to my kids. To put into practice that knowledge and not stay quiet. To help build up and not tear down, to work on what I love so I can use it as my voice. To simply love and listen. Because BLACK LIVES MATTER, and:

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that” -Martin Luther King Jr.

How are you showing love today?
